The European Investment Bank refers to this stage as the "Valley of Death" after the technology developer has invested considerable money and time in bringing the technology to the market and then needs to raise more capital.

This often results in a delay in becoming commercially attractive to project developers at the time that they apply for finance, where investors would normally seek between 12 to 24 months to satisfy their technology risk criteria.
